August 18,2025 – The ongoing Parliament session is expected to witness high drama and historic recognition as the Opposition prepares to move an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, while the Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion to honor Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS).
Opposition Pushes for Impeachment
The INDIA alliance, comprising major Opposition parties, has signaled that it will submit an impeachment notice against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in both Houses of Parliament. The move follows allegations of widespread irregularities in the recently concluded general elections, with Opposition leaders repeatedly accusing the Election Commission of failing to prevent what they described as “voter chori” or vote theft.
Sources within the alliance confirmed that the motion is aimed at drawing national attention to alleged lapses in the electoral process. Opposition MPs claim that voter lists were manipulated in several constituencies and that complaints made to the Election Commission were not adequately addressed.
The Election Commission has firmly denied the allegations, dismissing them as “unsubstantiated” and urging parties to submit verifiable proof of electoral malpractice. Officials from the Commission also stated that the conduct of the polls was transparent, monitored, and carried out in line with constitutional provisions.
Impeaching the Chief Election Commissioner is a rare and constitutionally rigorous process. It requires a two-thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, making the success of such a motion highly unlikely without significant cross-party support. Despite this, the Opposition has decided to proceed with the move, asserting that it is a question of democratic accountability.
Lok Sabha to Celebrate Astronaut’s Achievement
In a parallel development, the Lok Sabha will convene a special discussion to acknowledge the achievements of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who created history by becoming the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS.
Shukla, an officer of the Indian Air Force, recently completed a mission that involved conducting multiple scientific experiments in collaboration with international partners, including NASA and Roscosmos. His stay at the ISS marked a significant step forward for India’s participation in global space exploration.
The discussion will highlight Shukla’s contribution to advancing India’s space ambitions and is expected to be attended by the Prime Minister, senior cabinet members, and leaders across party lines. Lawmakers are likely to emphasize how his mission reflects India’s growing expertise in space technology and complements the government’s Gaganyaan Mission, which aims to send an entirely Indian crew into orbit in the near future.
A Session of Contrasting Themes
Monday’s proceedings will reflect two sharply different aspects of the national discourse. On one hand, members of Parliament will engage in a contentious debate over allegations surrounding the Election Commission, while on the other, they will unite to celebrate a milestone achievement in India’s space journey.
The impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar is expected to dominate political headlines, though it remains uncertain how far it will progress given the constitutional requirements. At the same time, the recognition of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is poised to be remembered as a defining moment in India’s parliamentary and scientific history.
