August 5 — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines arrived in India on Monday for a five-day State Visit aimed at expanding cooperation between the two nations in defense, trade, and cultural exchange. This marks his first official visit to India since assuming office in 2022.
The visit also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines, adding symbolic importance to the occasion.
President Marcos was received with a ceremonial welcome in New Delhi. He is expected to hold meetings with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior Indian officials during his stay.
Defense and Security Talks on the Agenda
Defense collaboration is a key focus of the visit. Both countries are expected to discuss ways to enhance maritime cooperation, strengthen military exchanges, and explore defense equipment partnerships. In recent years, India and the Philippines have shown increasing interest in working together on regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
Analysts note that deepening defense ties reflects a shared interest in maintaining peace and stability in the region, especially amid rising tensions in surrounding waters.
Push to Strengthen Trade and Investment
Economic engagement is another major component of the agenda. Talks are likely to center around improving trade flows, boosting investment, and building resilient supply chains. Key sectors include information technology, pharmaceuticals, green energy, and infrastructure development.
Trade between India and the Philippines reached approximately $3.4 billion in the previous year, and new agreements are expected to encourage further growth in both directions.
Cultural and Educational Links Highlighted
To celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, a number of cultural programs and academic collaborations are being planned. Both sides are expected to sign educational MoUs to promote student exchanges and joint research projects. Officials from cultural institutions will also meet to explore long-term partnerships.
Strategic Significance
Ahead of formal discussions, both countries released statements reaffirming their support for an open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region. The visit is expected to strengthen India’s Act East Policy and reinforce the Philippines’ engagement with regional partners.
