July 25,2025:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received with full state honours, including a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour, as he arrived in the Maldives on Thursday for a key diplomatic visit. The reception, held at Republic Square in Malé, was led by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, marking a renewed focus on bilateral engagement between the two nations.
This visit is PM Modi’s first since President Muizzu assumed office and comes amid efforts to recalibrate ties following recent political shifts in the island nation. The formal welcome included traditional elements of state protocol, symbolizing mutual respect and a willingness to deepen cooperation.
Following the ceremony, the two leaders held official talks centered on maritime collaboration, infrastructure, climate resilience, and regional security. Both sides emphasized the need for strategic cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region and reaffirmed commitments to ongoing development projects supported by India.
Modi highlighted India’s continued support for the Maldives under its “Neighbourhood First” policy, pointing to shared goals in connectivity, health care, and sustainable development. New agreements are expected to enhance collaboration in key sectors such as disaster management, renewable energy, and defense.
While recent months have seen some diplomatic strain, Thursday’s visit is widely seen as a move to restore momentum in India-Maldives relations. The leaders also discussed expanding people-to-people exchanges and boosting tourism, education, and digital initiatives.
The visit underscores India’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy and its intent to remain a key partner for stability and growth in the region. PM Modi is scheduled to attend additional engagements before concluding his trip.
