PM Modi in Manipur and Mizoram: “21st Century Belongs to the North-East,” Says Prime Minister in Imphal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025 undertook a landmark visit to Manipur and Mizoram, his first trip to Manipur since the 2023 ethnic violence. He inaugurated major infrastructure projects worth thousands of crores, launched Mizoram’s first railway link to the national network, met displaced families in Churachandpur, and declared in Imphal that “the twenty-first century belongs to the North-East.”

Rail Connectivity Milestone for Mizoram

In Aizawl, Modi flagged off the 51-kilometre Bairabi–Sairang railway line, linking Mizoram’s capital region to the national railway grid for the first time. He also launched a Rajdhani Express service from Sairang to Delhi, signalling a major boost to connectivity and trade.

Massive Development Push in Manipur

The Prime Minister laid foundation stones and inaugurated projects worth over ₹8,500 crore across Manipur. These include new roads, bridges, health centres and educational institutions in Imphal and Churachandpur. According to government figures, about ₹7,300 crore of works are in Churachandpur and roughly ₹1,200 crore in Imphal.

Meeting Violence Victims

This was Modi’s first face-to-face interaction with people displaced by the 2023 ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. In relief camps, he heard personal stories of loss and assured central assistance for rehabilitation and peace building.

“21st Century Belongs to the North-East”

Addressing a public meeting in Imphal, Modi said the North-East had long been overlooked but is now “at the heart of India’s growth story.” He urged communities to end hostility and embrace development together. “Peace is the prerequisite for progress,” he told the crowd.

Challenges and Symbolism

Heavy rain forced changes to the Prime Minister’s itinerary, with some events attended via video link. Nonetheless, security was tight throughout the visit, underscoring its political and symbolic importance: it was his first Manipur trip since more than 260 people were killed and tens of thousands displaced in 2023.

Opposition Reaction

While BJP leaders hailed the visit as evidence of renewed focus on the region, opposition parties said it came too late and questioned whether promises would translate into real improvements on the ground.

Conclusion

Modi’s joint visit to Manipur and Mizoram combined infrastructure announcements with outreach to victims of past violence. Whether the new rail links, road projects and welfare packages will ease tensions and spark sustained growth will depend on long-term follow-through from both the Centre and state governments, and on communities themselves choosing peace over conflict.
