PM Modi Marks 10 Years of Digital India, Eyes Global Digital Leadership

10 years of Digital India

2 July,2025-Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday marked the 10th anniversary of the Digital India initiative, highlighting its role in transforming governance, boosting the economy, and positioning India as a global digital leader. Launched on 1 July 2015, the flagship programme aimed to empower citizens through technology-driven services and bridge the digital divide.

Addressing a gathering of policymakers, industry leaders, and young innovators, the Prime Minister said that India’s journey from a data-poor country to a data-rich nation in just a decade has been a model for the world. He noted that over 90 crore Indians have been digitally empowered under the initiative, with robust infrastructure enabling last-mile delivery of services.

“India is not just adopting technology — we are creating it, scaling it, and sharing it with the world,” Modi said. “Digital India has become the foundation of our nation’s transformation.”

Highlighting major milestones, he pointed to the success of platforms like Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, CoWIN, and Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) trinity as key enablers of financial inclusion and digital governance. Modi said India’s digital economy now contributes over $400 billion annually and supports a thriving startup ecosystem, with the country ranking among the top three in the number of unicorns globally.

The Prime Minister also unveiled the government’s next phase, “Digital India 2.0,” which will focus on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and digital skills training. The new vision aims to deepen India’s digital capabilities while preparing the country for future technological disruptions.

Under the original Digital India plan, more than 6 lakh villages have been connected through optical fibre, and over 1.5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) have been established to provide access to government services in rural areas.

“Through Digital India, even the most remote village is now linked to the mainstream of development,” Modi stated. “This is true social and digital inclusion.”

Modi further emphasized India’s role in promoting digital public infrastructure globally. He said that the India Stack — which includes Aadhaar, UPI, and DigiLocker — is being adopted by other countries and offered as a global public good. He credited India’s digital leadership during its G20 presidency and in global platforms such as the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).

He called on citizens, developers, and global partners to work together towards building a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India) by 2047, with digital innovation at its core.

“This is not the end of a journey, but the beginning of a new digital era,” Modi said. “We have shown the world what is possible when technology meets vision and intent.”

The 10-year celebration included exhibitions showcasing India’s digital innovations, panel discussions on future tech trends, and digital award ceremonies recognizing contributions from startups and state governments.
