PMC Prepares DPRs for Three Major Roads in Wagholi to Boost Connectivity

Wagholi road development

June 30,2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for three significant road projects in Wagholi, aiming to improve connectivity and ease growing traffic congestion in the rapidly urbanizing suburb.

The proposed roads include the stretch from Wagheshwar Temple to Kesnand Road, Bakori Phata to Lohegaon, and a key link from Wagholi to the Pune-Ahmednagar Highway via Ubale Nagar. These routes are expected to serve as vital arteries for thousands of commuters and are being designed to support long-term urban growth.

According to senior PMC officials, the DPRs are currently being drafted with inputs from town planning experts and local stakeholders. “The development of these roads will address the increasing vehicular pressure in Wagholi and ensure smoother traffic flow. The DPRs will also incorporate proper drainage, footpaths, and street lighting,” an official said.

Wagholi, located on the eastern fringe of Pune, has seen a sharp rise in residential and commercial establishments over the past decade. However, this rapid expansion has not been matched with adequate infrastructure, leading to severe traffic bottlenecks, especially during peak hours.

Residents have long demanded better road connectivity and public transport facilities. Local citizens’ groups welcomed the PMC’s move but emphasized the need for timely execution and minimal inconvenience during construction. “This is a step in the right direction, but authorities must ensure transparency and involve the public in planning,” said Rajesh Deshmukh, a Wagholi resident and civic activist.

Environmental assessments are also being considered during the DPR process to ensure sustainable development. PMC aims to strike a balance between infrastructure growth and ecological preservation, particularly in areas with green cover and water bodies.

While an official timeline for construction has not been declared, PMC sources indicate that work may begin early next year, once DPRs are finalized and necessary approvals and tenders are completed. The funding for these projects is expected to come from PMC’s infrastructure budget, along with possible support from state-level urban development schemes.

The road developments are part of PMC’s broader strategy to integrate Wagholi more effectively into Pune’s urban framework. With increasing pressure on central Pune’s infrastructure, suburbs like Wagholi are emerging as key zones for urban expansion.

As PMC gears up for execution, the road upgrades are seen as critical to supporting Wagholi’s future as a livable and well-connected extension of Pune city.
