Pune is experiencing persistent heavy to moderate rainfall this week, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the city from September 29 to October 3. The alert has been issued as a precautionary measure in view of the possibility of intense spells of rain, waterlogging, and localized flooding in several parts of the district.
According to the IMD forecast, the city is likely to witness widespread rainfall with occasional heavy showers during this period. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during peak rainfall hours, as heavy downpours could lead to traffic disruptions, delays in public transport, and flooding in low-lying areas.
The rainfall, which has been continuing for the past few days, has already caused waterlogging in several pockets of Pune, slowing down vehicular movement and leading to traffic congestion across major routes. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has deployed emergency response teams to address complaints of blocked drains and to monitor flood-prone zones. Civic officials have also appealed to citizens not to throw waste into drainage lines, as this aggravates waterlogging during heavy rain.
The orange alert issued by IMD is a step below the “red alert” but indicates the need for heightened caution. “The weather systems currently active over Maharashtra are bringing significant rainfall activity to the region. Citizens are advised to stay indoors when possible and follow advisories issued by local authorities,” an IMD official said. The forecast also suggests a likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in isolated areas.
Farmers in the surrounding rural areas of Pune district have expressed concern over the impact of continuous rains on standing crops. While the rainfall is beneficial for reservoirs and groundwater recharge, excess rain at this stage may damage crops such as soybeans and paddy, which are close to the harvesting season. Agricultural experts have advised farmers to ensure adequate drainage in their fields to minimize potential losses.
In addition, the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority has asked residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert for updates. Schools and colleges in certain low-lying zones have been advised to remain prepared for potential disruptions if the intensity of rainfall increases further.
Meanwhile, reservoirs supplying water to Pune city are witnessing a steady rise in water levels due to the ongoing showers, ensuring sufficient storage for the coming months. While this development provides relief from water scarcity concerns, officials caution that the situation must be closely monitored to prevent sudden releases from dams if inflows increase significantly.
The IMD has recommended that citizens carry umbrellas or raincoats, avoid venturing near swollen rivers or water bodies, and exercise caution while driving through waterlogged areas. Emergency helpline numbers have also been shared by local authorities to assist citizens in case of flood-related incidents.
With the orange alert in place until October 3, Pune is expected to see continued spells of rainfall through the week. Residents are advised to remain cautious, plan their travel accordingly, and stay updated on weather forecasts to ensure safety during this period.
