Pune Metro Enhances Security Measures Amid Rising Passenger Safety Concerns

In response to a series of recent incidents involving passenger misconduct, Pune Metro has implemented stringent security protocols across its network to bolster commuter safety and uphold public decorum.

The decision to intensify security measures follows multiple reports of inappropriate behavior within metro coaches. Notably, a 65-year-old man from Muzaffarnagar, Bihar, was apprehended on September 9 for making obscene gestures and attempting to photograph a female passenger aboard a metro train. This incident has heightened concerns regarding women’s safety in public transport systems.

To address these issues, Pune Metro has introduced dedicated security patrols operating throughout the day on both active lines, from Ramwadi to Vanaz and from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate. Security supervisors and staff will patrol trains and station premises, conducting five to six checks daily to deter unruly behavior. The goal is to provide passengers with a safe, pleasant, and disciplined journey.

In addition to increased patrols, metro authorities continue to confiscate prohibited items such as tobacco, alcohol, explosives, petrol, diesel, weapons, and hazardous chemicals. Recently, officials seized 3.7 kg of tobacco on the Purple Line and 8.7 kg on the Blue Line during routine checks at station entry points.

The public response to these enhanced security measures has been largely positive, with commuters expressing appreciation for the increased presence of security personnel. However, some passengers have called for the installation of panic buttons at stations to further enhance safety. Pune Metro has indicated that such features are under consideration as part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger security.

Pune Metro’s proactive approach to enhancing security reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its passengers. As the city continues to embrace rapid urbanization and increased metro ridership, such initiatives are crucial in maintaining a secure and disciplined public transport environment.
