4 July, 2025-The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) is set to host the International Citizen Science Conclave 2025 on July 5, offering a platform for scientists, researchers, students, and the general public to engage in discussions and activities promoting community-driven scientific initiatives.
Organised in collaboration with the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), the conclave aims to highlight the growing importance of citizen science in India. This year’s theme, “Engaging Citizens in Scientific Endeavours for Sustainable Development,” reflects a global push toward making science more inclusive and participatory.
The event will include keynote speeches by prominent experts, hands-on workshops, panel discussions, and exhibitions. These sessions are designed to showcase how public involvement in research—through data collection, analysis, and monitoring—can support national and global scientific goals.
Participants will explore a wide range of topics, including air and water quality monitoring, biodiversity mapping, amateur astronomy, and the use of mobile and web-based platforms for real-time data sharing. Demonstrations from initiatives such as eBird, the India Biodiversity Portal, and other grassroots science networks will be featured as successful case studies.
In a special segment dedicated to youth engagement, students and early-career researchers will have the chance to present projects that demonstrate the impact of local scientific interventions led by communities. This aims to inspire greater youth participation and encourage collaboration between educational institutions and citizen groups.
One of the key objectives of the conclave is to create an enabling environment for citizen-led science projects by building strong partnerships between research institutions, NGOs, educators, and communities. Organisers believe that such collaborations can enhance scientific outreach, foster innovation, and strengthen public trust in science.
The conclave will also serve as a launchpad for new digital tools designed to expand citizen engagement in key sectors such as environmental monitoring, disaster response, and public health awareness.
Individuals from all backgrounds—including educators, students, environmentalists, and science enthusiasts—are welcome to attend. Registration for the event is open online via the official IISER Pune website.
As citizen science gains momentum across the globe, this conclave positions India at the forefront of participatory research efforts, with a strong emphasis on sustainable and inclusive scientific development.
