June 30,2025 – Amid growing concerns over crowd mismanagement, rising crime, and deteriorating facilities at the Bhimashankar temple, the Pune district administration has announced a comprehensive development plan aimed at improving the pilgrimage experience. Key measures include the introduction of an online darshan booking system, enhanced security, and better sanitation infrastructure.
Bhimashankar, one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas in India and a major religious site in Maharashtra, draws lakhs of devotees every year, especially during the holy Shravan month and festivals like Mahashivratri. However, the growing influx of pilgrims has led to several issues including long queues, theft, illegal vendors, and poor hygiene conditions around the temple premises.
In response, officials have proposed a technology-driven solution to manage crowds and ensure orderly access to the sanctum. An online darshan system will be implemented to allow devotees to pre-book time slots for temple visits. Authorities believe this system will help decongest the area, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons.
“We are developing a digital platform for online darshan registration. It will help streamline the flow of devotees and reduce overcrowding,” said a senior official from the Pune Collectorate. The system is expected to be launched before the upcoming pilgrimage rush.
In addition to digital solutions, the administration is also focusing on improving physical infrastructure and safety. Plans include installing high-definition CCTV cameras across the temple premises, increasing police presence, and improving coordination with forest and tourism officials to safeguard visitors in remote trekking routes leading to the temple.
To address the unhygienic conditions caused by unregulated food stalls and inadequate sanitation, authorities will issue licenses to authorized vendors and install portable toilets and waste disposal units. Regular cleanliness drives will also be undertaken to maintain the temple’s sacred environment.
Given Bhimashankar’s location within the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, the plan also emphasizes sustainable development. Officials have assured that all construction and expansion projects will follow environmental norms and use eco-friendly materials.
Local businesses and devotees have welcomed the move, though some expressed skepticism over implementation. “We have heard such announcements before, but nothing changed on the ground. We hope this time it will be executed seriously,” said a local vendor near the temple.
The development plan is being carried out jointly by the Pune district administration, Maharashtra Tourism Department, and temple management authorities. If successfully implemented, it is expected to significantly improve the experience for pilgrims while preserving the spiritual and ecological sanctity of the Bhimashankar temple.
