1 July, 2025-Passenger fares for Indian Railways have been revised with effect from today, 1 July 2025. The Ministry of Railways has implemented a fare hike for long-distance routes, while journeys below 500 kilometres will remain unaffected by the increase.
According to a notification issued by the Railway Board, fares for express and superfast trains covering distances over 500 km have been increased by an average of 4% to 7%. The hike applies to reserved categories including sleeper, AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier, and executive classes. However, suburban, unreserved, and short-distance travel up to 500 km will not see any revision in fares.
This is the first significant passenger fare hike in more than three years. The Ministry stated that the revision was necessary to offset increasing operational costs and to fund ongoing infrastructure and service improvements across the network.
“The fare adjustment has been made after thorough evaluation, with an aim to minimise the financial burden on short-distance travellers. The revenue generated will be utilised to enhance passenger amenities, improve safety, and modernise infrastructure,” the Ministry said in an official statement.
Under the revised fare structure, passengers travelling in AC coaches for distances above 1,000 km will see a fare increase ranging between ₹50 and ₹100, depending on the train type. Sleeper class fares on the same routes may rise by ₹20 to ₹40. The superfast surcharge, reservation charges, and other applicable fees will remain unchanged.
The decision has received mixed reactions from the public. While daily commuters and short-distance travellers welcomed the exemption, long-distance passengers expressed concern over affordability. Passenger associations have urged the Railway Ministry to ensure that the additional revenue is transparently used for improving services.
Experts from the transport sector have termed the hike reasonable and necessary. “Passenger fares have remained largely static for years, despite rising input costs. A marginal revision is required to maintain financial sustainability and upgrade services,” said transport economist Rajeev Mehta.
The updated fare structure has been implemented on the IRCTC online booking platform and other railway ticketing systems starting midnight. Passengers are advised to check the revised fare before booking their tickets.
With this move, the Indian Railways aims to strike a balance between affordability and operational efficiency while continuing to provide essential services to millions of passengers daily.
