India’s defence manufacturing received a major boost on October 18, 2025, when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the first batch of BrahMos missiles from the newly established BrahMos Aerospace facility in Lucknow. The event marked a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defence production and showcased the growing success of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC).
The Lucknow facility, located in Sarojini Nagar, is equipped to manage all phases of missile integration, testing, and quality verification. This state-of-the-art unit forms part of India’s broader “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, designed to promote indigenous defence manufacturing and reduce dependency on imports.
During the ceremony, Rajnath Singh highlighted the strategic importance of the new production facility, stating that it represents not just manufacturing progress but also a powerful message of deterrence. He noted that with the enhanced range of BrahMos missiles, every inch of Pakistan’s territory now falls within India’s strike capability, reflecting the country’s growing defence strength.
The Lucknow unit is initially expected to produce around 100 BrahMos missiles per year, with plans to expand production to 150 units annually in the coming years. The project is projected to generate ₹150–200 crore in annual GST revenue for Uttar Pradesh and significantly strengthen the local economy. Beyond its economic impact, the facility is also set to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for skilled youth in the region, reinforcing the UPDIC’s goal of making the state a major defence manufacturing hub.
The establishment of the BrahMos facility in Lucknow is part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, an ambitious initiative aimed at decentralizing defence production through multiple nodes across the state, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Chitrakoot, and Agra. This move is expected to attract defence-related investments and enhance India’s ability to develop, test, and produce advanced weapon systems domestically.
The BrahMos missile, a product of Indo-Russian collaboration, is one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. Capable of being launched from land, air, and sea platforms, it combines speed, precision, and versatility, making it a key asset in India’s defence arsenal. The local production of these missiles not only strengthens India’s deterrence capabilities but also reduces reliance on foreign suppliers, improving strategic autonomy.
The flag-off of the first BrahMos batch from the Lucknow facility marks a turning point in India’s defence manufacturing landscape. It signifies both technological advancement and economic empowerment, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a central player in the country’s defence ecosystem.
