Rapido Driver Slaps Woman in Bengaluru After She Objects to Rash Driving; No Help from Onlookers

June 17 — A woman commuter in Bengaluru was allegedly slapped by a Rapido bike taxi driver after she confronted him about his reckless driving. The incident took place in the Koramangala area and has raised serious concerns regarding passenger safety and public apathy.

According to the police, the woman had booked a Rapido ride through the mobile app on Sunday afternoon. During the trip, she reportedly felt unsafe due to the driver’s rash behaviour and asked him to slow down. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly reacted with hostility, halted the bike, and assaulted her in the middle of the road.

The woman claimed that several people witnessed the confrontation, but none stepped in to help or intervene. She later visited the local police station to file a formal complaint. Based on her statement, a case has been registered under relevant sections related to assault and verbal abuse. Police have begun tracing the accused with the help of Rapido’s booking records.

In response, Rapido released a statement expressing concern over the matter. The company confirmed that the driver’s account has been suspended and that they are working closely with the authorities. “Rapido has zero tolerance for any misconduct by its captains. We are committed to passenger safety and are extending full support to the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many users demanding stronger verification processes for drivers and better in-app safety features such as emergency alerts and live tracking. Several posts have highlighted the vulnerability of women while using two-wheeler ride-hailing services in urban areas.

Experts have also voiced concerns over the public’s lack of response. “When people remain passive in situations of public violence, it reflects a deeper societal issue. Intervention, even in the form of alerting authorities, can make a significant difference,” said Dr. Meera Narayan, a Bengaluru-based sociologist.

Law enforcement officials have urged the public to act responsibly when witnessing such incidents. “Immediate reporting can help prevent escalation and support victims. Silence and inaction encourage repeat offenses,” said a senior police officer.

The case has once again brought the spotlight on the safety challenges faced by app-based transport users, especially women. As the investigation continues, both ride-hailing companies and civic authorities are being urged to review and strengthen their safety mechanisms.
