Popular Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away on September 18 at the age of 46. The performer, known for his unique comedic style and energetic screen presence, died at GEM Hospital in Perungudi, Chennai, after collapsing on a film set earlier this week.
According to hospital sources, Shankar was admitted on September 16 in critical condition following a sudden collapse during shooting. Doctors reported that he was suffering from a massive gastrointestinal bleed and subsequent multi-organ dysfunction. Despite intensive medical care, his condition deteriorated, leading to his death.
Shankar had been experiencing health problems in recent years, including jaundice and related complications, which had caused significant weight loss. Though he was undergoing treatment, his sudden collapse during filming brought his fragile health condition into focus.
Over his two-decade career, Robo Shankar appeared in more than 200 Tamil films, including notable titles such as Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, Maari and Viswasam. He gained initial fame for his mimicry and robotic dance style, which earned him his nickname. On television, he became a household name through comedy shows like Kalakka Povathu Yaaru?, where his performances were widely appreciated.
The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from the film fraternity and political leaders. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, actor Kamal Haasan, and several industry colleagues expressed condolences. Many film personalities visited his residence to pay their respects.
Robo Shankar is survived by his wife Priyanka Shankar and daughter Indraja. His funeral arrangements are expected to take place in Chennai, with friends, colleagues, and fans likely to gather in large numbers to bid farewell.
His sudden death has left the Tamil film industry in mourning, marking the loss of a performer celebrated for his humour, versatility, and contribution to both cinema and television.
