Pune, June 20: The sacred Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi entered Pimpri-Chinchwad on Wednesday, welcomed by a sea of devotees chanting the name of Lord Vitthala with unwavering devotion. The palkhi, which began its annual pilgrimage from Dehu, is part of the traditional Pandharpur Wari Yatra heading toward Pandharpur for the auspicious Ashadhi Ekadashi.
As the palkhi moved through the twin cities, roads were filled with thousands of warkaris, who walked in synchrony, singing abhangs and waving saffron flags. Citizens lined up along the route to offer their respects, flowers, and hospitality, reinforcing the spiritual and communal bond that the wari tradition continues to foster across generations.
Elaborate Arrangements by PCMC
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), in coordination with local organizations and volunteers, made extensive preparations for the palkhi’s arrival. Clean drinking water, first-aid stations, mobile sanitation units, and temporary shelters were set up to support the large number of devotees accompanying the procession.
The palkhi halted for the night at the Vitthal-Rukmini Mandir in Nigdi, where cultural and devotional programs continued late into the evening. Traditional dindi formations, bhajans, and group recitals of Tukaram Maharaj’s abhangs created an atmosphere of devotion and unity.
Spirit of Devotion Unites All Ages
Devotees of all age groups, from young children to senior citizens, actively participated in the walk. Many warkaris wore white attire, Gandhi caps, and carried tulsi plants as part of their offering to Lord Vitthala. The spirit of equality and service was on full display as participants distributed food and water among fellow pilgrims.
Speaking to the media, a warkari from Nashik said, “Walking with the palkhi gives us peace and purpose. This tradition reminds us of humility, devotion, and community living.”
Next Stops on the Palkhi Route
The procession will continue through Pune city, making key halts in Bhavani Peth and Nana Peth, before proceeding toward Saswad and then on to Pandharpur, where it will merge with the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi from Alandi. The two palkhis are expected to reach Pandharpur in time for the Ashadhi Ekadashi celebrations scheduled for July 17.
Cultural and Economic Impact
Apart from its spiritual significance, the yatra also brings economic activity to the regions it passes through. Local vendors, transport operators, and small businesses benefit from the arrival of thousands of visitors. Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with traffic regulations and follow civic instructions during the palkhi’s passage.
The arrival of the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi in Pimpri-Chinchwad has once again brought the twin cities together in a grand expression of devotion, discipline, and cultural pride. As the chants of “Vitthala Vitthala” resonate through the streets, the palkhi continues to inspire unity and faith across Maharashtra.
