The 56th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), scheduled from 20 to 28 November 2025 in Goa, will shine a spotlight on one of Indian cinema’s most enduring icons. Superstar Rajinikanth will be felicitated during the festival’s closing ceremony in recognition of his five‑decade career in film.
The festival, being held in Goa from 20–28 November 2025, marks a significant moment in the Indian and international film calendar. At this year’s festival, Rajinikanth’s contributions to Indian cinema are being celebrated as part of a broader emphasis on inclusivity, innovation and global collaboration in the filmmaking world.
In addition to his personal honour, the festival will host a rich lineup of films and events: over 240 films from 81 countries, including world and Asian premieres. Against this backdrop, Rajinikanth’s felicitation—scheduled at the closing ceremony on 28 November—serves both as a tribute to his remarkable career and as a statement of the evolving stature of Indian cinema globally.
Rajinikanth, born Shivaji Rao Gaikwad, began his film career in the mid‑1970s and has since become a cultural phenomenon in India and abroad. His distinct style, charisma and longevity make this milestone noteworthy. The honour at IFFI aligns with earlier recognitions: he had previously received the Golden Jubilee ICON Award at IFFI in 2019, underlining his standing in cinematic history.
What’s more, IFFI’s choice to spotlight Rajinikanth at its 56th edition signals a reaffirmation of regional cinema’s importance, as well as the festival’s commitment to celebrating film—past, present and future. With the Indian Panorama section spotlighting Tamil films and other regional works, the festival both honours tradition and embraces fresh narratives.
As the 56th IFFI unfolds in Goa from 20 to 28 November 2025, the felicitation of Rajinikanth will stand out as a highlight—not only recognising half a century of cinematic brilliance but also underpinning the festival’s larger themes of innovation, diversity and global film culture. With more than 240 films and varied programmes, IFFI 2025 is poised to reinforce India’s role on the world stage of cinema—while paying homage to one of its most iconic stars.
