The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced an innovative plan for the Thirumangalam station as part of its Phase II expansion. This station will not only serve as a transportation hub but also feature modern co-working areas and leisure spaces, aiming to blend travel with productivity and relaxation.
Thirumangalam, located along the Madhavaram–Sholinganallur corridor of the Phase II Chennai Metro project, is being developed as a multifunctional station. The proposal includes the integration of office pods, retail outlets, food zones, and seating areas—marking a shift from traditional metro infrastructure to smart, commuter-centric spaces.
CMRL’s objective is to enhance the everyday commuting experience by offering passengers value-added services. Professionals, students, and remote workers will benefit from well-equipped co-working facilities that include high-speed internet, modular desks, and meeting rooms. These spaces are expected to be especially useful for those who work on-the-go or prefer flexible working environments.
Apart from professional use, the station will also include leisure areas such as cafés, snack counters, and resting lounges. These features are being designed to provide a comfortable and engaging environment for travelers, especially during waiting periods or transit breaks.
CMRL is actively seeking partnerships with private firms to design and manage these commercial areas. This public-private model aims to ensure high-quality services while generating revenue to support the metro’s operations and future projects. The integration of such facilities also aligns with the broader concept of transit-oriented development, which promotes the creation of mixed-use spaces around transport networks.
Accessibility and sustainability are also key considerations in the station’s design. The station will incorporate features like energy-efficient lighting, inclusive access points, and eco-friendly construction materials. Special facilities for elderly passengers and people with disabilities will be included to ensure a seamless and safe commuting experience.
The Phase II Chennai Metro project covers 118.9 km and is scheduled for completion by 2028. Once operational, the project will significantly improve urban connectivity, reduce road congestion, and encourage more people to switch to public transport.
