Top Maoist Commander Madvi Hidma Killed in Chhattisgarh Encounter, Marking Major Setback for Insurgency

Security forces encounter scene

In a significant breakthrough for India’s counter-insurgency operations, Maoist commander Madvi Hidma — one of the most-wanted insurgent leaders in the country — was killed in an encounter near the Andhra Pradesh–Chhattisgarh border. Security officials confirmed that the operation took place in the dense Pullagandi forest region, where special forces launched a coordinated strike based on precise intelligence inputs.

Hidma, who carried a bounty estimated between ₹25 lakh and ₹50 lakh, was regarded as the most feared strategist within the CPI (Maoist). His death is being seen as a strategic turning point in the long-standing battle against Left-wing extremism in central India.

A Dangerous Legacy Comes to an End

Madvi Hidma’s name had become synonymous with some of the deadliest Maoist attacks witnessed over the past decade. Believed to be the commander of Battalion No. 1 of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), he was reportedly involved in more than 25 major assaults on security forces, including high-casualty ambushes in Dantewada and Sukma.

Operating from the dense Abujhmad and Sukma–Bijapur forest belt, Hidma was known for his mastery of guerrilla warfare, use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and deep familiarity with forest routes. Born in the tribal village of Puvarti, he rose quickly through Maoist ranks despite limited formal education, eventually becoming the only Bastar tribal member to hold a position on the Maoist Central Committee.

Security officials noted that under Hidma’s leadership, Battalion No. 1 grew into a highly trained group of more than 130 armed cadres, often considered the most potent Maoist fighting unit in the region.

Leadership Vacuum Within Maoist Ranks

Experts believe Hidma’s death will have far-reaching implications for the Maoist movement. His operational expertise, local influence, and symbolic importance had made him a central figure in Maoist strategy. With his elimination, a leadership vacuum is expected to emerge, potentially limiting the group’s ability to plan large-scale operations.

Internal sources within intelligence agencies have indicated that the Maoists were already facing organisational strain due to sustained security pressure. Several meetings of senior Maoist leaders reportedly failed to materialise over the past year, raising concerns about shrinking cadre strength and limited mobility within the forests.

The absence of a clear successor to lead Battalion No. 1 is likely to deepen the crisis. Hidma had cultivated a reputation that few within the organisation can replicate, especially in mobilising tribal support and navigating difficult forest terrain.

Government Calls It a Historic Victory

Top government officials hailed the encounter as one of the most significant successes in recent years. The Union Home Ministry described Hidma’s killing as a “decisive blow” that breaks the spine of the Maoist operational structure. Security agencies have reiterated their goal of eliminating Maoist influence from core districts well before the government’s declared deadline.

According to senior officials, the operation reflects improved coordination between state police forces and central agencies, backed by enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and deployment strategies.

Looking Ahead: A Weakening Insurgency

While Hidma’s killing is expected to disrupt Maoist operations in the short term, officials caution that the insurgency may attempt retaliatory attacks to demonstrate strength. Nevertheless, the morale boost for security forces and the psychological impact on Maoist cadres mark a substantial shift in the conflict dynamics.

As ground forces continue area domination operations in the region, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether this momentum translates into long-lasting peace across Chhattisgarh’s tribal belt.
