Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed, and five others injured in an ambush by unidentified gunmen in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday evening. The attack took place near Nambol Sabal Leikai, roughly 60 kilometers south of Imphal, while a convoy of the paramilitary force was on patrol.
According to local authorities, the assailants opened fire on the convoy before fleeing the scene. The injured personnel were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable. Security forces have launched a joint search operation in the area to track down the attackers.
This incident comes amid a backdrop of heightened security concerns in Manipur, where insurgent activities have occasionally targeted security personnel. The Assam Rifles, which plays a critical role in maintaining law and order in the northeast, regularly conducts patrols and counter-insurgency operations in volatile regions.
Officials condemned the attack and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security measures in the region. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our personnel and are committed to ensuring the safety of all our forces deployed in Manipur,” said a senior official.
The attack has drawn attention to the continuing security challenges in the northeastern states, prompting calls for enhanced coordination between central and state security agencies. Local authorities have appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected as authorities comb through the area and gather intelligence.
