Two Pilgrims Killed, Three Injured in Landslide on Kedarnath Trek Route

Landslide on Kedarnath trek kills two, injures three amidst heavy rainfall.

A tragic landslide struck the Kedarnath trek route in Uttarakhand on Tuesday, resulting in the death of two pilgrims and injuries to three others. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the Char Dham Yatra pilgrims as unpredictable weather and terrain hazards continue to pose threats.

According to officials from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the landslide occurred near the Bhimbali-Linchauli area, a key stretch of the Kedarnath trek. The victims were part of a group trekking towards the sacred Kedarnath temple when massive debris and rocks slid down the mountainside due to recent rainfall.

Rescue operations were immediately launched after the incident was reported around 11:30 AM. The SDRF team, along with local police and health personnel, responded quickly and managed to retrieve all the affected individuals. Unfortunately, two were declared dead on the spot, while the remaining three sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to a nearby medical facility in Guptkashi.

Authorities have temporarily halted trekking activities along the affected stretch and issued advisories to pilgrims, asking them to proceed with extreme caution or delay their plans if possible. The administration also emphasized the need to check daily weather updates before commencing the journey.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured all necessary assistance to the victims’ families. “We are in constant touch with the rescue teams, and all arrangements are being made to ensure the safety of pilgrims,” he said.

Experts have repeatedly warned about the fragile geography of the Himalayan region, especially during the monsoon months. Sudden landslides are common due to soil erosion, deforestation, and increased human activity along the pilgrimage routes. This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure, early warning systems, and stricter environmental regulations.

The Kedarnath Yatra, part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, attracts lakhs of devotees each year. While it offers spiritual fulfillment, the trek also challenges even seasoned hikers due to its high altitude and rugged terrain.

In light of the incident, officials have asked pilgrims to follow safety instructions strictly and carry emergency essentials. Pilgrimage organizers are also being instructed to conduct awareness drives on weather preparedness and safety protocols.
