Two American citizens stranded aboard a US-flagged sailing vessel near the Nicobar Islands were successfully rescued by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), following a distress alert routed through the US Consulate in Chennai. The rescue operation was executed by ICG Ship Rajveer, showcasing India’s prompt response and maritime preparedness.
The distress signal was received after the vessel experienced a technical breakdown amid rough sea conditions, approximately 130 nautical miles southeast of Great Nicobar Island. In response, the ICG deployed Rajveer to the reported location under emergency protocols.
Upon locating the vessel, ICG personnel found both US nationals on board, requiring immediate medical support and logistical assistance. The crew conducted a safe evacuation and extended necessary medical care, ensuring the individuals’ well-being during the transfer.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the Coast Guard’s efficient handling of the operation. In a formal statement, he said, “India remains steadfast in its commitment to maritime safety and humanitarian assistance. The Indian Coast Guard’s swift and professional response in rescuing foreign nationals is praiseworthy and reflects our operational readiness.”
Officials confirmed that the rescued individuals are in stable condition and were appreciative of the aid received. The US Consulate expressed gratitude for India’s timely intervention, acknowledging the professionalism displayed during the mission.
This operation further solidifies the Indian Coast Guard’s growing stature in international maritime safety and emergency response. With its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean Region, the Coast Guard has been pivotal in numerous high-risk search and rescue efforts involving both Indian and foreign vessels.
Maritime experts emphasize the importance of such missions, especially given the complex and often unpredictable conditions surrounding the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago—an area frequented by international maritime traffic.
India’s quick response highlights not only its capabilities but also the deepening cooperation between India and the United States in maritime security. Bilateral ties have increasingly focused on ensuring safe navigation, information sharing, and coordinated efforts in times of maritime emergencies.
As the volume of maritime movement continues to grow in the Indo-Pacific corridor, the Indian Coast Guard remains vigilant and prepared to respond to any situation requiring humanitarian or safety intervention.
This latest mission underlines India’s commitment to acting as a reliable maritime partner in the region, capable of delivering swift assistance regardless of nationality or jurisdiction.
