Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project Fully Operational After 28 Years of Construction

USBRL project

In a landmark achievement for Indian infrastructure and regional connectivity, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has finally become fully operational after nearly 28 years of construction. This ambitious rail corridor, which connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s transportation and strategic development, especially in the northern frontier of Jammu and Kashmir.

The USBRL project, first conceived in 1996, aimed to provide an all-weather and reliable rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and other parts of the country. Due to the region’s complex topography, challenging weather conditions, and security concerns, the project faced multiple delays and technical obstacles. However, its completion now stands as a symbol of engineering excellence and strategic perseverance.

Spanning a total length of 272 kilometers, the rail link passes through some of the most difficult terrain in the Himalayas, featuring 38 tunnels and over 900 bridges. The crowning jewel of this project is the Chenab Bridge, which is the world’s highest railway bridge, standing at 359 meters above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower.

The final segment that completes the link—between Sangaldan and Reasi—was inaugurated in June 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauding it as a “historic moment for India’s unity and development.” With this inauguration, the entire route from Udhampur to Baramulla via Srinagar is now seamlessly connected, drastically reducing travel time and improving accessibility in the region.

The strategic significance of the USBRL project is immense. Apart from bolstering tourism and trade in Jammu and Kashmir, it enhances the mobility of defense forces in a sensitive border area. The link is also expected to bring long-term economic benefits by improving the supply chain logistics and boosting local businesses across the region.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the socio-economic impact of the project, stating, “This is not just a railway line; it’s a lifeline for Jammu and Kashmir. It connects people, cultures, and economies, ensuring inclusive growth.”

The Indian Railways has announced that regular passenger and freight services will commence shortly, with Vande Bharat and other express trains likely to be introduced on this route. Additionally, the region is expected to see a surge in tourism, as scenic train journeys through the Himalayas gain popularity.
