Uttarkashi Flash Floods: Rescue Operations Intensify; Over 50 Still Missing

Uttarkashi flash floods

August 7, 2025:
Rescue operations are underway in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district after a series of devastating flash floods and cloudbursts wreaked havoc in the region earlier this week. As of Wednesday, over 70 people have been rescued, while more than 50 individuals are still reported missing. Authorities have deployed helicopters and ground teams to search for the missing and provide relief to affected communities.

The disaster, triggered by intense rainfall in the upper Himalayan region, caused massive water surges in rivers and streams, particularly impacting the Mori, Barkot, and Purola blocks of Uttarkashi. The sudden cloudbursts resulted in extensive flooding, washing away homes, blocking roads, and damaging vital infrastructure. Several villages remain cut off due to landslides and damaged bridges, complicating relief efforts.

District Magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht confirmed that joint rescue efforts are being led by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), with assistance from the Indian Army. Helicopters have been deployed to airlift stranded residents and deliver essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid.

“We are working round the clock to locate the missing persons and ensure the safety of those stranded,” said DM Bisht. “Restoring road connectivity remains a top priority, as many interior areas are still inaccessible.”

The Uttarakhand government has also set up temporary relief camps to shelter displaced families. Medical teams have been dispatched to flood-hit regions to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, while engineers are assessing damage to infrastructure and beginning preliminary restoration work.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected areas and held emergency meetings to coordinate the ongoing operations. He assured that all possible resources are being mobilized and announced compensation for the families of the deceased and injured.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall in the coming days, prompting officials to issue a red alert for parts of Uttarakhand. Local residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid travel unless necessary.

Environmental experts have reiterated concerns over the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events in the Himalayan region. They point to climate change, deforestation, and unregulated construction as contributing factors to the growing vulnerability of the area.

As rescue and relief work continues, the focus remains on locating the missing and providing urgent support to the thousands affected by the disaster. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and follow updates from official sources.
