Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Face Delay, First Rake Expected by Mid-2026

Vande Bharat sleeper train

June 28:
The launch of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train has been postponed, with the initial sleeper rake now projected to be completed by mid-2026. The manufacturing of the train is currently underway at the Rail Coach Factory in Latur, Maharashtra.

The sleeper-class version of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express was initially expected to roll out by late 2025. However, officials have cited technical complexities and extended testing requirements as primary reasons for the delay. The sleeper version is designed for overnight journeys, making it structurally more advanced than the existing chair car models.

According to railway sources, the sleeper coaches are being designed with enhanced safety systems, improved ride comfort, and upgraded passenger facilities. These include modular sleeping arrangements, air-conditioned compartments across different tiers, bio-vacuum toilets, infotainment systems, and noise-insulated interiors. The train is expected to operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

Manufacturing is being handled by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) at the modern facility in Latur, which is part of the central government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative to boost domestic production. The new rakes are expected to bring a significant shift in long-distance rail travel, especially on high-demand routes such as Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata.

Trial runs for the first Vande Bharat sleeper rake are scheduled to begin in early 2026. A phased rollout will follow, with around 10 rakes expected to be deployed in the first phase. The trains will offer First AC, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier configurations.

Officials emphasize that despite the delay, the project is on track to meet quality and performance benchmarks. “The sleeper version involves more sophisticated engineering and safety validations. Our focus remains on delivering a product that meets the highest standards in safety, comfort, and efficiency,” an official said.

The introduction of sleeper Vande Bharat trains is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernize its passenger fleet and gradually phase out older long-distance services. These new trains are expected to significantly reduce travel time while enhancing passenger experience on overnight routes.

With more than 250 Vande Bharat trains planned under various categories by 2030, the sleeper variant is positioned to play a key role in transforming India’s rail travel landscape.
