August 19,2025 – The West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) has announced an indefinite suspension of the NEET UG 2025 counselling process for MBBS and BDS admissions. The decision, issued through a notice on Monday, has left 11,178 candidates uncertain about their admission prospects.
The counselling was halted amid legal challenges surrounding the implementation of Other Backward Class (OBC) reservations in the state’s medical admission process. The matter, currently under the consideration of the Calcutta High Court, has already caused repeated interruptions in the counselling schedule.
Before the suspension, WBMCC had released a revised merit list on August 16, covering 85 per cent of the state quota seats. A total of 5,589 MBBS and BDS seats in government and private institutions were included. Choice filling had begun, and the first round of allotment was expected on August 20, with reporting scheduled for August 21 to 23. The process was stopped just two days ahead of the allotment results.
The uncertainty has caused anxiety among medical aspirants and their families. Many fear the delay could disrupt the commencement of the academic session and place additional pressure on students waiting for clarity. Parents and education observers have urged the authorities to resolve the legal dispute quickly to avoid further disruption.
Officials have confirmed that no fresh schedule will be released until further directions are issued by the High Court. Candidates have been advised to regularly monitor the official WBMCC website for updates.
