August 2025 – The Kasba Ganpati Temple, regarded as the Gramadevata (guardian deity) of Pune, continues to hold the foremost position in the city’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Known as the first and most respected Manache Ganpati, the temple not only symbolizes deep devotion but also represents the historic roots of Pune’s cultural identity.
Historical Significance
The temple’s origins go back to the 1600s when Jijabai, mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is believed to have installed the idol after its discovery in the Kasba Peth area. From that moment, the deity became the presiding protector of Pune. Centuries later, during Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s movement to transform Ganesh Chaturthi into a public festival, Kasba Ganpati was placed at the front of immersion processions, a tradition that continues to this day.
2025 Celebrations and Procession
This year, the temple once again takes the lead during the grand immersion procession. Authorities have finalized a morning start at 9 a.m., ensuring that the festivities remain organized and devotional while avoiding late-night delays. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has confirmed that Kasba Ganpati will retain its traditional pride of place, despite occasional discussions on altering the order of procession.
The celebrations also uphold Pune’s musical traditions. Instruments such as dhol and tasha, which are integral to Ganesh processions, continue to be allowed, reinforcing the cultural heartbeat of the festival. Their rhythmic beats create a powerful atmosphere, blending devotion with community participation.
Social and Community Role
Kasba Ganpati is not confined to ritual worship. The Shri Kasba Ganpati Mandal actively participates in social welfare. In 2025, the temple organization extended support to 125 students from underprivileged backgrounds, demonstrating a commitment to education and social responsibility. These initiatives highlight how the temple’s role extends beyond faith into meaningful community development.
Global Recognition
The temple’s influence now reaches far beyond Pune. Devotees living abroad are increasingly seeking replicas of the Kasba Ganpati idol, with orders being shipped to countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This growing demand shows how the temple remains a spiritual anchor for Punekars around the world, connecting the diaspora to their cultural roots.
Heritage and Identity
Kasba Ganpati is more than the city’s first Manache Ganpati—it is a living symbol of Pune’s heritage. From its establishment in the Maratha period to its central role in Tilak’s nationalist movement, the temple has been both a religious and social unifier. Even today, it inspires devotion while reminding the city of its historical legacy.

As Ganesh Chaturthi unfolds in 2025, the Kasba Ganpati Temple continues to embody Pune’s faith, history, and collective pride. Leading the immersion procession, preserving musical traditions, promoting education, and reaching devotees across the globe, the temple stands as a timeless guardian of the city’s cultural spirit. Its enduring legacy reaffirms that true heritage lies not only in rituals but in the unity and progress of the community.
