New Delhi, June 14, 2025: World Blood Donor Day 2025 is being observed today across the globe with a renewed focus on promoting voluntary, unpaid blood donations and recognising the invaluable contribution of blood donors in saving lives. The annual event, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), is marked on June 14 — the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who discovered the ABO blood group system.

This year’s theme, “Give Blood, Give Life: Be a Lifesaver”, aims to raise awareness about the growing need for safe blood and its critical role in modern healthcare. The campaign focuses particularly on encouraging youth participation and spreading awareness through community engagement and public events.

Across various countries, including India, public health authorities, hospitals, NGOs, and Red Cross societies have organised blood donation drives, awareness rallies, and honour ceremonies for regular donors. In India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) are coordinating nationwide campaigns involving mobile blood collection vans, donor registration activities, and health check-ups for donors.

According to WHO data, while more than 120 million blood donations are collected globally each year, the demand often exceeds supply in many regions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Safe blood is essential for treating a wide range of conditions including trauma, surgeries, anaemia, cancer treatments, and childbirth complications.

“Voluntary donors are the backbone of the blood supply system. Regular and safe donations not only save lives but also strengthen the healthcare infrastructure,” said a senior official from WHO in Geneva.

Hospitals across India, including AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, and state-run medical colleges, are observing the day with extended hours for donation and awareness programmes. Educational institutions are also joining the campaign by organising blood camps and sensitisation sessions for students.

With the advancement of digital platforms and donor tracking apps, the process of donating blood has become more accessible and transparent. These innovations have helped streamline the registration process and ensure timely communication with donors.

World Blood Donor Day is one of the WHO’s 11 official global health campaigns and serves as a vital reminder of the importance of regular, voluntary blood donations. As the demand for safe blood continues to rise, health experts stress the need for continuous donor mobilisation and improved infrastructure for collection and storage.

The observance of World Blood Donor Day 2025 highlights a global commitment to achieving universal access to safe blood and ensuring that no patient suffers due to its unavailability.
