Zelenskyy, Trump Meet in Washington as Russia-Ukraine Peace Push Builds

Zelenskyy and Trump in talks

August 19,2025 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday for talks focused on possible steps toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump said after the meeting that he was “confident both leaders want the conflict to stop,” adding that discussions were aimed at shaping conditions for peace.

The talks took place as Germany confirmed plans for a rare face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin within the next two weeks. That encounter is expected to be closely watched by global powers seeking a breakthrough after more than three years of fighting.

Sources familiar with the Washington discussions said the agenda covered long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, financial support for recovery, and approaches to disputed territories. No agreement was reached, but both sides agreed to continue consultations.

The war has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, while front-line battles remain unresolved. Western governments have increasingly pressed for renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.

European leaders welcomed the latest moves. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the upcoming Zelenskyy-Putin meeting “an important step,” while French President Emmanuel Macron urged negotiators to keep humanitarian concerns at the center of talks.

Despite growing diplomatic activity, deep divisions persist. Moscow continues to demand recognition of areas under its control, while Kyiv insists on restoring all internationally recognized borders. Analysts say bridging this gap will be the central challenge.

For Ukraine, the Washington talks also aimed to reinforce global backing and secure commitments for post-war reconstruction. Trump’s involvement adds a new dimension, given his influence in U.S. politics and his long-standing call for a negotiated settlement.

The coming weeks are expected to be decisive. If the Zelenskyy-Putin summit produces progress, broader negotiations may follow. If not, the conflict risks sliding further into a drawn-out stalemate.
