AAP Names Industrialist Rajinder Gupta as Candidate for Punjab Rajya Sabha Bypoll on October 24

Rajinder Gupta

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced Rajinder Gupta, Chairman Emeritus of the Trident Group, as its official nominee for the Rajya Sabha bypoll from Punjab, which is scheduled for October 24, 2025. The decision highlights the party’s strategy to bring influential professionals into the political mainstream while consolidating its strength in the Upper House.

The bypoll was triggered after Sanjeev Arora, an AAP Member of Parliament, resigned from the Rajya Sabha seat following his election to the Punjab Legislative Assembly earlier this year. With AAP commanding a clear majority of 93 legislators in the 117-member Assembly, Gupta’s victory in the bypoll is almost certain.

Rajinder Gupta, a well-known industrialist and philanthropist, leads the Trident Group—one of India’s leading business conglomerates with interests across textiles, paper, and energy. His nomination is viewed as a reflection of AAP’s growing emphasis on economic development and its effort to involve corporate leaders in governance and policymaking.

Ahead of the nomination, Gupta stepped down from several public positions, including Vice-Chairman of the Punjab State Economic Policy and Planning Board and Chairperson of the Sri Kali Devi Temple Advisory Committee. The move was widely interpreted as preparation for his entry into national politics through the Upper House.

Party officials expressed confidence in Gupta’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the policy discussions at the central level. “Mr. Gupta’s experience in industry and management will add depth to our party’s vision for Punjab’s economic and social progress,” an AAP spokesperson said.

Political analysts see this nomination as part of AAP’s broader effort to diversify its leadership base by bringing together political experience and professional expertise. The inclusion of prominent non-political figures, they say, helps the party position itself as a reform-driven alternative in Indian politics.

The upcoming Rajya Sabha bypoll will fill the vacant seat for the remainder of the term, which continues until April 2028. The Election Commission of India has issued the schedule, and the nomination process is currently underway.

By nominating a figure like Rajinder Gupta, the Aam Aadmi Party appears to be sending a clear message: that it aims to combine governance with professionalism, and political representation with practical experience—setting a possible template for future candidate selections.
