8 July, 2025-In a significant and symbolic move, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, has posthumously honoured Captain Karnal Sher Khan, a soldier who displayed exceptional bravery during the 1999 Kargil War. The recognition holds deeper meaning as Sher Khan’s body was initially not accepted by Pakistani authorities after the conflict, despite his acts of heroism being acknowledged by the Indian Army.
Captain Karnal Sher Khan was one of the most courageous officers in the Pakistani military during the Kargil operations. After falling in battle, his body was recovered by Indian troops. At the time, Pakistan officially denied involvement in the conflict and refused to accept the bodies of its fallen soldiers.
Brigadier MPS Bajwa, an Indian Army officer who was involved in the conflict and is now retired, played a key role in changing that narrative. Deeply moved by Sher Khan’s courage on the battlefield, Brigadier Bajwa wrote a personal citation honouring the soldier’s gallant actions. He placed this written tribute in Sher Khan’s uniform before returning the body with full military honours. This citation later formed the basis of Sher Khan being awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award for bravery.
Now, over two decades later, General Munir’s decision to revisit the memory of Sher Khan and officially honour him again underscores the timeless nature of military respect and sacrifice. Speaking at a recent military remembrance event, Munir stated, “Captain Sher Khan embodied bravery, integrity, and devotion to duty. It is our responsibility to remember his sacrifice and ensure that future generations draw inspiration from such selfless service.”
Brigadier Bajwa, reflecting on the event, remarked that honouring courage — even in an adversary — reflects the finest values of any professional military force. “Sher Khan was fearless and committed. Recognising his bravery was the right thing to do,” he said in a recent interaction.
The gesture by General Munir not only pays tribute to Sher Khan but also acknowledges a chapter of history that was long left in ambiguity. For years, the official stance on the Kargil conflict avoided reference to regular Pakistani troops’ involvement. This recent tribute signals a shift toward recognising individual sacrifice, regardless of political narratives.
The renewed honour also serves as a rare example of mutual respect between two rival armed forces. It reinforces the idea that gallantry in uniform deserves remembrance beyond borders and ideologies.
As the region continues to face complex challenges, this act of military recognition sends a broader message: that the dignity of those who serve should be upheld, and their courage remembered — no matter which side of the border they stood on.
