August 4,2025 — Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has initiated communication with an employee who was recently photographed sleeping outside the company’s Pune office, reportedly in protest over unpaid wages.
The incident came to light after a photo of the man sleeping on a mat outside the premises went viral on social media platforms, drawing public attention and sparking debate over employee treatment and wage disbursement practices in India’s IT sector.
In a statement, TCS confirmed it is in contact with the individual and is looking into the issue. “We are aware of the matter and are in touch with the concerned associate. The company is addressing the issue in line with our internal policies and processes,” a spokesperson said.
The man in question is believed to be a TCS employee who claimed he had not been paid for several months despite being assigned no project work. According to reports shared online, he took to this form of protest after repeated attempts to get clarity from the company allegedly failed.
The viral image led to a flurry of reactions on social media, with users expressing concern over the work culture in the IT industry. Some questioned TCS’s handling of employees on the bench — a term used for those not assigned to active client projects — while others urged for an industry-wide review of HR grievance redressal mechanisms.
While TCS did not disclose the specifics of the employment or payment status of the individual, the company maintained that employee issues are handled with sensitivity and due process.
Industry experts note that although benching is a common practice in IT firms to manage shifting project demands, it can sometimes lead to prolonged periods of inactivity and anxiety for employees. The protest has reignited discussions around mental health, job security, and communication gaps in large corporations.
TCS, which employs over 600,000 people globally, is known for its structured internal processes and relatively stable work environment. However, this incident has highlighted the challenges even top-tier IT companies may face in addressing individual employee concerns promptly and transparently.
The matter continues to unfold, with TCS expected to conduct an internal review. As public scrutiny grows, the incident may prompt broader discussions within the corporate sector about wage policies, bench management, and employee engagement strategies.
