August 30, 2025: Adani Power Ltd., one of India’s major private sector power producers, has received a contract from MP Power Management Company Ltd. (MPPMCL) to construct an 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Anuppur district. The project is expected to strengthen the electricity supply in Madhya Pradesh and support the state’s growing energy requirements.
The estimated cost of the project is ₹10,500 crore. It will be developed under a Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) framework. According to company officials, the first unit of the plant is expected to be operational within 54 months from the appointed date. This timeline reflects Adani Power’s commitment to expanding its capacity to meet rising demand, driven by industrial growth and increased urban consumption.
The contract was awarded following a competitive bidding process, in which Adani Power offered a tariff of ₹5.838 per unit. This pricing is expected to ensure that electricity from the new plant remains cost-effective for local consumers, providing a reliable power supply for both households and industries.
Despite the economic and energy benefits, the project has drawn attention from environmentalists. The plant site is located near areas rich in wildlife, including tiger habitats. Conservation experts have emphasized the need for careful planning and implementation to reduce potential impacts on the local ecosystem. Adani Power has stated that it will adopt measures to minimize environmental disruption during construction and operation.
The Anuppur thermal power plant is part of Adani Power’s wider strategy to expand its presence across India’s energy sector. Alongside this project, the company is developing other large-scale plants, including a 2,400 MW facility in Bhagalpur, Bihar, and a 1,600 MW plant in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. These projects collectively aim to meet India’s growing electricity demand, which is projected to rise significantly in the next two decades.
Preparatory work on the Anuppur plant is expected to begin shortly. Adani Power plans to implement sustainable practices throughout the project to ensure energy production is balanced with environmental responsibility. The completion of the plant is anticipated to enhance Madhya Pradesh’s power generation capacity, support local economic development, and provide a long-term solution to the state’s rising energy needs.
