AIMIM May Join Opposition Alliance in Bihar, Says Owaisi

Asaduddin Owaisi hints at AIMIM joining Mahagathbandhan in Bihar polls.

June 30,2025 — All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has indicated that his party may join hands with the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The statement has sparked fresh political speculation, as parties gear up for a high-stakes battle in the politically significant state.

Speaking to reporters, Owaisi revealed that AIMIM’s Bihar unit president, Akhtarul Iman, has already initiated talks with leaders of the Mahagathbandhan. “Akhtarul Iman has spoken to some of their leaders. We will inform the media about our final decision once discussions are complete,” Owaisi said.

The Mahagathbandhan, comprising Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, is currently positioning itself as a united front to counter the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP and JD(U). AIMIM’s potential entry into the alliance is being viewed as a significant development, especially in constituencies with a sizable Muslim population.

Political observers believe AIMIM’s support could strengthen the opposition’s prospects in several key constituencies, particularly in the Seemanchal region, where the party won five seats in the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls. However, AIMIM has faced criticism in the past from other opposition parties, who accused it of splitting anti-BJP votes.

In response to such criticism, Owaisi said, “Those who accuse us of dividing votes should introspect. We have always worked to raise the issues of the marginalized and backward communities. Our goal is to strengthen secular politics, not weaken it.”

So far, leaders of the Mahagathbandhan have not made any formal statement regarding AIMIM’s inclusion. However, insiders suggest that preliminary discussions have been positive and a final call will be taken after internal consultations.

If the alliance materializes, it could lead to a reshaping of electoral equations in Bihar, where caste and community dynamics play a crucial role in election outcomes. AIMIM’s grassroots presence in certain districts and its appeal among Muslim voters could potentially boost the opposition’s chances of consolidating anti-incumbency sentiments.

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be closely contested, with the NDA banking on its governance record and development agenda, while the opposition hopes to leverage issues such as unemployment, inflation, and social justice.

As the political temperature rises in Bihar, all eyes will be on whether AIMIM officially joins the Mahagathbandhan, a move that could redefine the contours of the opposition unity ahead of the polls.
