Bengaluru Police Bust Major Fake “Nandini” Ghee Racket; Two-Year Interstate Adulteration Operation Exposed

In a significant breakthrough, Bengaluru Police have dismantled a large-scale inter-state racket involved in the adulteration and illegal sale of counterfeit Nandini ghee. The sophisticated operation, active for nearly two years, involved blending genuine ghee with palm and coconut oils at an unauthorised manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu before distributing it across Karnataka. Four individuals have been arrested, and more than 8,000 litres of adulterated ghee have been seized.

Adulteration Network Spread Across States

Investigators revealed that the illegal production unit, located in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, was central to the adulteration process. Here, low-cost palm and coconut oils were mixed with a small quantity of genuine Nandini ghee to mimic the texture and aroma of the original product. The counterfeit blend was then packed in high-quality duplicate sachets and bottles bearing the Nandini brand label.

Once produced, the containers were transported to Bengaluru in goods vehicles and distributed to retail outlets, wholesalers, and even some Nandini parlours. The fake ghee was sold at regular market prices, allowing the accused to profit significantly while deceiving consumers.

Major Seizures During the Crackdown

During coordinated raids conducted by the Central Crime Branch’s Special Investigation Squad and the Karnataka Milk Federation’s Vigilance Wing, authorities seized:

  • 8,136 litres of adulterated ghee
  • Large quantities of palm and coconut oils
  • Four transport vehicles used for delivery
  • Machinery and packaging equipment from the illegal unit
  • Cash amounting to ₹1.19 lakh
  • Five mobile phones linked to the operation

The total value of the seized materials is estimated at approximately ₹1.26 crore.

Key Accused and Roles Identified

Police have arrested four individuals believed to be central to the racket:

  1. Mahendra, a licensed KMF distributor, suspected of orchestrating the supply chain
  2. Deepak, his son and alleged accomplice
  3. Muniraju, involved in transportation and logistics
  4. Abhi Arasu, a driver intercepted while transporting fake ghee

According to investigators, Mahendra had drastically reduced his official ghee orders in recent months—a pattern that alerted KMF officials and triggered closer scrutiny. The distributor is alleged to have diluted 1 litre of genuine ghee into 5 litres of adulterated product to maximise profits.

How the Racket Operated

The operation relied on a coordinated system involving procurement, adulteration, packaging, transport, and distribution. Fake labels and containers were sourced to closely replicate authentic packaging, making the counterfeit product extremely difficult for customers to distinguish.

The investigation also revealed that the racket relied on frequent inter-state movement of raw materials, helping it evade easy detection. Surveillance teams tracked suspicious vehicle movements, leading to the eventual bust.

Public Health Concerns and Regulatory Response

The incident has sparked public concern due to the widespread use of Nandini ghee in households across Karnataka. Adulteration with vegetable oils compromises both purity and nutritional value, and authorities are now conducting detailed laboratory tests to verify whether any harmful substances, including animal fats, were used.

Food safety regulators have begun tightening inspections at wholesale and retail points, while KMF has announced stricter vigilance across its supply chain to prevent similar violations.

The dismantling of this interstate adulteration racket marks a major victory for law enforcement and food safety authorities. With key suspects in custody and a sophisticated network exposed, the operation underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and robust regulatory mechanisms. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting consumer trust and ensuring that adulterated food products are swiftly identified and removed from the market.
