BIGGEST RUSSIAN DRONE STRIKE HITS KHARKIV, UKRAINE’S SECOND-LARGEST CITY

Russian drone strike

Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv was rocked in the early hours of Saturday by what officials have called the largest drone strike since the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia. The overnight barrage, involving dozens of Iranian-made Shahed drones, caused widespread damage to civilian infrastructure, left multiple people injured, and temporarily crippled essential services in the city.

According to Ukrainian Air Force officials, more than 50 drones were launched from Russian territory, with a large concentration targeting Kharkiv. The city endured at least 16 powerful explosions, with drones striking residential complexes, energy stations, and metro infrastructure. Emergency crews rushed to contain fires and rescue civilians trapped in damaged buildings.

“This was the most intense drone attack Kharkiv has experienced in the entire duration of the war,” said Oleh Syniehubov, Governor of Kharkiv Region. He confirmed that 12 civilians were injured, including two children, though no deaths had been officially reported at the time of filing this report.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressing the nation in the aftermath of the attack, condemned the assault, saying, “Russia is continuing its campaign of terror. But Kharkiv will not be broken.”

The Ukrainian military stated that more than 35 drones were intercepted, though the scale and intensity of the attack overwhelmed current air defense systems. Several apartment blocks suffered structural damage, while large portions of the city experienced power outages due to attacks on electricity distribution points. Authorities also announced the temporary suspension of metro and train services following damage to transport infrastructure.

Military analysts say the attack represents an escalation in Moscow’s aerial tactics. The use of Shahed-136 and Shahed-131 kamikaze drones, provided by Iran, has become more frequent, particularly targeting urban centers. Experts believe the objective is to weaken Ukraine’s infrastructure and erode civilian morale ahead of expected counter-offensives by Kyiv.

International condemnation swiftly followed. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the strike “a shameful act of aggression,” while EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell termed it “a blatant violation of international law and human decency.”

The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold an emergency session to discuss the developments, although significant action remains unlikely due to Russia’s veto powers within the council.

In response to the intensified aerial threat, Kyiv has renewed appeals for advanced air defense systems, including Patriot batteries and anti-drone technology, from Western allies.

Despite the destruction, the spirit of Kharkiv remains defiant. Locals gathered near damaged sites to assist emergency responders. “We have survived worse and we will rebuild again,” said Olena Kravets, a Kharkiv resident who lost her home in the attack.

The latest strike reaffirms the escalating nature of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, now well into its third year, with civilians increasingly in the crosshairs of a technologically evolving battlefield.
