Pune, June 5 – The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to commence construction of an access road for the ambitious ₹909-crore glass skywalk project in Lonavla. The development marks a crucial step toward enhancing infrastructure and tourism in the region.
The glass skywalk, proposed near the popular Lion’s Point in Lonavla, aims to replicate internationally acclaimed glass bridges and provide panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain ranges. Once completed, the structure is expected to become one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Maharashtra.
According to PMRDA officials, the construction of the access road will facilitate the transportation of materials and machinery required for the main skywalk project. The road will connect the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway to the skywalk site and include features such as crash barriers, retaining walls, and a robust drainage system to withstand the monsoon season.
PMRDA officials stated, “This is the first visible development on the ground for the skywalk project. We are focused on ensuring safety and minimal environmental impact as we proceed.”
The skywalk will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with PMRDA handling planning and regulatory processes while private firms will be responsible for construction and future operations. The structure will feature a glass-bottom pedestrian walkway, viewing decks, a visitor center, restaurants, parking zones, and electric shuttle services to ensure eco-friendly transportation.
Environmental clearances and impact assessments are already underway to ensure timely execution. The skywalk is also expected to significantly boost local employment opportunities and tourism-driven revenue in the region.
Tendering for the main construction work is expected to begin following the completion of the access road.
Once operational, the glass skywalk is projected to transform Lonavla into a world-class tourist hub, enhancing the appeal of the Western Ghats and positioning Maharashtra as a premium tourism destination.
