Campaigning Ends for First Phase of Bihar Assembly Elections 2025

As Bihar gears up for the first phase of its much-anticipated Assembly elections, political campaigning concluded on a high note on Tuesday evening. The first phase, scheduled to take place today, marks the beginning of a crucial electoral battle that will determine the political direction of the state for the next five years.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), polling will be conducted across 71 constituencies spread over 16 districts, including regions like Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad, and Rohtas. The state machinery has made elaborate security and logistical arrangements to ensure peaceful voting. More than 2 crore voters are expected to exercise their franchise in this phase, with thousands of polling stations set up across both urban and rural areas.

High-Octane Campaigning Ends

Over the past few weeks, Bihar witnessed intense campaigning from all major political parties, with leaders making a last-ditch effort to sway undecided voters. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United), highlighted its achievements in governance, infrastructure, and law and order. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar emphasized stability and development as the cornerstones of his campaign, reiterating his government’s focus on women’s empowerment, rural connectivity, and employment opportunities.

In contrast, the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), spearheaded by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Indian National Congress, centered its campaign around issues of unemployment, inflation, and agricultural distress. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav emerged as a prominent face of the opposition, criticizing the NDA government for what he called “unfulfilled promises and rising joblessness.” He assured voters that his party would prioritize youth employment and social welfare schemes if voted to power.

Security and Voter Awareness

The Election Commission has deployed multiple layers of security, including central paramilitary forces, to ensure free and fair polling. Drone surveillance and webcasting of sensitive booths have also been arranged. Officials confirmed that strict COVID-19 protocols will remain in place, with thermal screening, sanitization, and social distancing norms being enforced at all polling stations.

To boost voter turnout, the ECI has launched several awareness drives under its “SVEEP” initiative (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation), urging citizens, especially first-time voters, to participate actively in the democratic process.

Key Constituencies and Stakes

The first phase will see several heavyweight candidates in the fray. Constituencies such as Gaya Town, Sherghati, and Dehri are expected to witness tight contests between the NDA and the Grand Alliance. Analysts suggest that the first phase will set the tone for the subsequent rounds of voting, shaping the narrative for both alliances going forward.
