July 26, 2025 — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed an indefinite ban on Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium from hosting any future Indian Premier League (IPL) matches following a tragic stampede earlier this month that claimed 14 lives and left over 50 injured.
The incident occurred on July 12, ahead of a high-profile match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Thousands of fans attempted to enter through Gate 4 when crowd management reportedly failed, triggering panic and a deadly stampede. According to initial reports from Karnataka State Police and an independent audit panel, the tragedy was caused by poor crowd control, inadequate staffing, and delayed gate openings.
In response, the BCCI announced the suspension of IPL matches at the venue until all safety protocols are reassessed and restructured. BCCI President Roger Binny stated, “The safety of spectators is paramount. Chinnaswamy Stadium will not be considered for any IPL games until full compliance with modern safety standards is ensured.”
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which manages the stadium, has acknowledged the lapses and expressed deep regret. In a statement, the KSCA said it is cooperating with ongoing investigations and is committed to overhauling its safety infrastructure.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has ordered a nationwide safety review of all major sports venues. A special task force will conduct audits on evacuation procedures, gate logistics, medical readiness, and emergency protocols at stadiums, especially those used during the IPL.
Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur termed the tragedy a “wakeup call” and emphasized that the government would ensure accountability and preventive measures. “No sporting event is worth the loss of life. Fan safety will be made a top priority,” he said.
The ban on Chinnaswamy has left RCB without a home ground for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The franchise is exploring alternate venues in Karnataka, including Mysuru and Hubballi. IPL organizers have also instructed all franchises to submit updated safety and crowd management plans before the next season.
