Delhi Government Launches Citywide Overhead Wire Removal Drive

Delhi overhead wire removal

In a major step toward urban beautification and infrastructure modernization, the Delhi government has launched a citywide mission to remove all overhead wires across the national capital. The initiative, spearheaded by the Public Works Department (PWD), aims to declutter the skyline and shift all overhead electrical and telecom cables underground.

The drive was formally announced earlier this week and will initially target key areas such as Connaught Place, Lutyens’ Delhi, and major markets in South and Central Delhi. Authorities aim to complete the first phase of the project by the end of this year, with further expansion planned for residential and outer zones of the city.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, addressing the media, stated, “This is a historic step in urban governance. For years, our citizens have endured the mess of overhead wiring. This project marks a transformation toward world-class infrastructure in Delhi.”

The project will involve collaboration between multiple agencies, including electricity distribution companies (discoms), telecom service providers, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). All existing wires will be rerouted through underground ducts to ensure safety, enhance visual aesthetics, and facilitate easier maintenance.

According to officials, the move is expected to significantly reduce the risk of fire hazards and electrocution, particularly during monsoon seasons. In addition, the underground system will improve digital and electricity infrastructure reliability, reduce outages, and minimize damage from environmental factors.

Residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) and urban planners have largely welcomed the initiative. However, concerns have been raised over potential traffic disruptions and road digging during the implementation. To address these issues, the government has directed all participating agencies to coordinate through a unified schedule and submit weekly progress reports.

A dedicated public helpline and mobile application are also being developed, allowing citizens to report locations where overhead wires remain. The government is reportedly considering incentives for private firms that expedite the shift to underground cabling.

The mission aligns with Delhi’s broader goal of becoming a smart city, offering improved civic infrastructure and a cleaner, more organized urban environment. If successfully implemented, the project could serve as a model for other Indian cities grappling with similar infrastructure challenges.
