In a significant escalation of the ongoing aviation turmoil, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has dismissed four senior flight operations inspectors for negligence and oversight lapses amid IndiGo’s massive operational disruptions. The regulator has also summoned IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers for a second round of questioning as part of an intensified investigation into the crisis.
This decisive regulatory action comes as IndiGo continues to grapple with one of the most extensive operational breakdowns in Indian civil aviation history. The disruptions, triggered by the airline’s inability to fully implement new pilot duty and rest norms, have resulted in widespread cancellations, leaving thousands of passengers stranded nationwide.
Oversight Failures at the Center of the Crisis
The four dismissed inspectors—responsible for monitoring IndiGo’s compliance with operational and safety rules—were reportedly tasked with supervising the airline’s preparedness to transition to the revised Flight Duty Time Limitations. The updated norms, aimed at reducing pilot fatigue and enhancing passenger safety, required airlines to overhaul crew scheduling and roster planning well in advance.
