In a major development for India’s electronics manufacturing landscape, Taiwanese multinational Foxconn has announced plans to establish a new production unit in Tamil Nadu focused on manufacturing enclosures for Apple’s iPhones. The investment reinforces India’s growing importance in the global tech supply chain and supports the government’s “Make in India” initiative.
Foxconn, globally known for assembling Apple products, is taking a step forward in localizing high-value components by launching a new plant dedicated to mechanical enclosures—the metallic shells that form the outer structure of iPhones. The proposed facility will be located in the Kancheepuram district and is expected to significantly enhance the depth of Apple’s supply chain within India.
This move marks a shift from basic assembly to more sophisticated manufacturing processes within the country. By producing high-precision components locally, the company is expected to generate skilled employment opportunities and promote technology advancement in the region.
India’s appeal as a manufacturing base has grown amid global supply chain shifts and efforts by major tech companies to reduce their dependence on China. The establishment of this new unit is aligned with Apple’s broader strategy to increase its production footprint in India, which is projected to account for 25% of global iPhone production by 2025.
Foxconn already operates a significant iPhone assembly unit in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The new plant will complement existing operations and is seen as a part of the company’s long-term expansion plans in India. Local government officials have expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its potential to attract more foreign direct investment and technological partnerships.
The expected investment for the new facility stands at approximately ₹1,600 crore (around $190 million). Construction is likely to begin soon, and once operational, the plant will cater to both domestic and international markets, adding to India’s role in the global electronics export chain.
Tamil Nadu’s leadership, particularly Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has welcomed the announcement and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting high-impact industrial projects. The state’s favorable policies, skilled workforce, and developed infrastructure continue to attract major global players in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing.
