Heavy Rains Disrupt Northern India; Amber Palace Wall Collapses, Cloudburst Hits Chamoli

Cloudburst damage in Chamoli

August 23,2025 – Heavy monsoon rains over the past 48 hours have caused severe disruption across several northern states, with incidents reported from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir.

In Jaipur, a section of the wall of the historic Amber Palace collapsed following continuous rainfall. The collapse, which occurred on Thursday night, damaged part of the outer fortification but no casualties were reported. Local authorities have cordoned off the affected area and initiated restoration work. The 16th-century fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has witnessed damage in past monsoon seasons but the scale of this collapse has raised concerns over the structural safety of heritage monuments exposed to prolonged rainfall.

In Uttarakhand, a cloudburst in Chamoli district led to flash floods that swept away several structures and left vehicles stranded along blocked routes. According to district officials, residential buildings suffered partial collapse, while a few shops and roadside establishments were washed away in gushing water. Disaster response teams have been deployed to carry out rescue operations, and efforts are underway to restore connectivity on the affected roads. Initial reports suggest that while some residents managed to evacuate in time, search operations continue to trace missing persons.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has issued advisories across multiple districts following forecasts of intense rainfall. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy showers over the Pir Panjal and Kashmir Valley regions in the coming days. Officials have urged residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain cautious. Emergency control rooms have been activated, and district administrations have been directed to keep relief measures ready.

The heavy downpours have also disrupted normal life in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. Rivers in hilly regions are flowing close to danger marks, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides. Road transport has been hit in several locations, with traffic diversions enforced on highways due to waterlogging and slope failures.

Experts attribute the intense rainfall to an active monsoon system moving across northern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that conditions remain favourable for continued heavy showers in the region over the next 48 hours. Authorities have been advised to maintain alertness, particularly in areas vulnerable to cloudbursts and flash floods.

In Rajasthan, heritage conservationists have expressed concern that repeated exposure to heavy rainfall could weaken historic structures. The state Archaeology Department has initiated an assessment of the damage to Amber Palace and related fortifications. Restoration work is expected to be undertaken once weather conditions improve.

The combined impact of these weather events has highlighted the challenges of managing both urban infrastructure and fragile ecosystems in hilly states during the monsoon season. While disaster management agencies have stepped up response, officials caution that further incidents cannot be ruled out if heavy rains persist.
