September 2025: The Indian government has reaffirmed that the ban on the Chinese short-video app TikTok will continue indefinitely. Union Minister for Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that no government discussions or proposals are underway to lift the restriction.
The statement follows recent speculation triggered by temporary accessibility of TikTok’s website on certain broadband and mobile networks, including Airtel and Vodafone. Vaishnaw emphasized that the app’s unblocking is not under consideration at any level of the administration.
TikTok was initially banned in India in June 2020 alongside 58 other Chinese apps, following concerns over data security and national safety. The government reviewed the platforms’ compliance and privacy measures and subsequently made the ban permanent in early 2021. Prior to the ban, India represented TikTok’s largest user base, with more than 200 million accounts.
The decision highlights the government’s ongoing focus on protecting citizens’ digital data and maintaining national security. Vaishnaw also noted that India remains open to foreign investments in technology sectors like electronics and semiconductors, provided they follow established regulatory frameworks.
The absence of TikTok has created opportunities for Indian short-video platforms such as Moj, Josh, Roposo, Chingari, and MX TakaTak. These platforms have gained popularity by offering content designed for local audiences, thereby strengthening India’s domestic digital ecosystem.
Industry observers note that the government’s approach signals a long-term commitment to cybersecurity while simultaneously fostering growth among homegrown digital platforms. Analysts suggest that India’s policy underscores the need for foreign technology companies to comply fully with national regulations if they wish to operate in the country.
By maintaining the ban on TikTok, India continues to prioritize data protection and national security while encouraging the expansion of domestic digital platforms tailored to Indian users.
