September 2025-Volkswagen has announced that its next-generation Polo will be fully electric, rebranded as the ID. Polo, with production expected to begin in 2026. A high-performance ID. Polo GTI version has also been confirmed, marking a significant move in the company’s electric vehicle strategy.
The ID. Polo will be built on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform, offering two battery options—38kWh and 56kWh—allowing for a driving range of up to 280 miles. Fast-charging capabilities of up to 125kW are expected, and the base model is projected to be priced under €25,000 ($29,300), making it a competitive option in the compact EV segment.
The ID. Polo GTI will carry forward Volkswagen’s iconic hot hatch legacy with enhanced power, sport-tuned suspension, and dynamic styling. Both models are slated for a 2026 production start, with the standard model’s official reveal planned for May.
This move is part of Volkswagen’s broader plan to revive well-known model names for its electric lineup, maintaining brand recognition while transitioning to electric mobility. Future EV models, including the Golf, Tiguan, and Passat, are expected to adopt a similar naming strategy.
Volkswagen’s ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI aim to make electric vehicles more accessible while combining performance, affordability, and heritage, signaling a bold step for the brand in the rapidly growing EV market.
