India Successfully Tests First Hydrogen-Powered Rail Coach at ICF Chennai

India’s first hydrogen train

July 26, 2025 — In a significant stride towards sustainable transportation, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced the successful testing of India’s first hydrogen-powered rail coach at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.

The indigenous coach, developed under the Indian Railways’ green mobility initiative, was tested as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and advance cleaner energy alternatives in the rail sector. The hydrogen-powered coach runs using hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct.

“This is a historic moment for Indian Railways and a big leap towards achieving our green mobility goals,” Vaishnaw said during the announcement. “The hydrogen-powered coach demonstrates our capability to innovate and lead in sustainable rail technology.”

The coach has been designed with a modular power pack, hydrogen storage tanks, and advanced safety systems. It is expected to be deployed on select non-electrified and heritage routes after further trials. Officials stated that the design and development were completed within 11 months, showcasing the efficiency and dedication of the engineering team at ICF.

The project is aligned with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make the country a global hub for green hydrogen production and utilization. The use of hydrogen as a fuel in railways is expected to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut down on operational emissions.

Indian Railways has set an ambitious target of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. With over 70% of the railway network already electrified, alternative fuel technologies such as hydrogen will play a crucial role in decarbonizing the remaining routes.

The successful test has drawn praise from industry experts and environmental advocates, who see it as a timely and strategic move toward climate-resilient infrastructure. Further pilot runs and data analysis will determine the next steps for scaling hydrogen-powered rail solutions across the country.
