India to Evacuate 1,000 Students from Conflict-Hit Region

Indian Air Force aircraft on standby for student evacuation operation

New Delhi, June 21 – The Government of India has launched an emergency operation to evacuate nearly 1,000 Indian students stranded in a conflict-hit region of the Middle East, following the rapid deterioration of the security situation. The Ministry of External Affairs, in close coordination with the Indian Air Force and other national agencies, has begun preparations for the large-scale repatriation effort.

Sources from the External Affairs Ministry confirmed that arrangements are being made to deploy special chartered flights and military aircraft to bring the students back home safely. The Indian Embassy in the affected country is in constant touch with local authorities and has established dedicated communication lines for students and their families.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said on Saturday that the safety of Indian citizens abroad remains the government’s highest priority. “We are monitoring the situation very closely. Our team is working on-ground and in Delhi to ensure every Indian is safely brought back,” he said during a press briefing.

Due to communication disruptions in the region, Indian agencies are relying on satellite phones and secure networks to maintain contact with students. Emergency helplines have been activated, and parents have been assured of timely updates and assistance. Families across India, while anxious, have welcomed the swift government response.

“My son had just begun his second year of engineering studies. The situation became unstable so quickly. We are relieved to know that the government is arranging for their safe return,” said a parent from Bengaluru.

This evacuation is being seen as another major diplomatic and logistical effort by India, following successful missions such as Operation Ganga in Ukraine (2022) and Operation Kaveri in Sudan (2023). The country’s preparedness and rapid response capability in crisis situations have received international praise in recent years.

Three Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft are currently on standby, along with two commercial airliners that may be used depending on the clearance from local authorities. Arrangements are also being made at embassies in nearby countries to provide temporary shelter and assistance in case transit becomes necessary.

According to officials, the evacuation is expected to commence within the next two to three days, once airspace and ground operations receive security clearance. The government has urged all Indian nationals in the affected area to remain in contact with the embassy and follow all safety protocols.

The operation underscores India’s continued commitment to protecting its citizens worldwide and reinforces the country’s ability to act swiftly during international emergencies. The successful repatriation of the students is expected to be completed in multiple phases depending on the evolving situation on ground.
