Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla has successfully completed a landmark space mission, during which he observed more than 230 sunrises from orbit and journeyed almost 10 million kilometres. This mission not only showcases India’s growing footprint in space exploration but also contributes to the nation’s future plans in manned spaceflight.
Shukla’s mission was part of a collaborative effort with global space agencies, where he spent several months aboard the International Space Station (ISS). While in orbit, he conducted scientific experiments, carried out maintenance duties, and supported environmental monitoring projects.
Due to the ISS’s high-speed rotation around Earth — completing one orbit approximately every 90 minutes — crew members experience multiple sunrises each day. Over the course of his mission, Shukla witnessed over 230 sunrises, each offering a breathtaking view of Earth from space and contributing to observations on Earth’s atmosphere and light patterns.
In total, he travelled nearly 9.8 million kilometres, gathering essential data for ongoing space research. His time in microgravity helped advance studies in space medicine, material science, and biological systems, laying groundwork for extended missions in the future.
The mission has also strengthened India’s preparations for its indigenous crewed space programme, Gaganyaan, which aims to send Indian astronauts into low Earth orbit aboard a domestically built spacecraft. Experts believe Shukla’s experience will be instrumental in shaping the training, health monitoring, and mission protocols for future Indian astronauts.
ISRO officials have praised his performance, noting the significance of his contribution to India’s space capabilities. The organization highlighted the mission’s success as a major step forward for Indian space ambitions and human spaceflight readiness.
