India’s First AI-Enabled Anganwadi Launched in Nagpur’s Waddhamna Village

AI-enabled Anganwadi launch

July 29,2025 — In a groundbreaking move aimed at transforming early childhood care and education, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday inaugurated the country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled Anganwadi in Waddhamna village of Hingna tehsil, Nagpur district. The initiative has been launched under the state government’s ambitious “Mission Bal Bharari” program.

Speaking at the launch event, CM Fadnavis said, “This is a historic moment not just for Maharashtra but for the entire nation. With this first-of-its-kind Anganwadi, we are bringing technology and compassion together to strengthen the foundation of our children’s future.”

The AI-powered facility integrates advanced digital tools such as smart classrooms, interactive learning modules, real-time health tracking, and automated attendance systems. These innovations are designed to personalize the learning experience and monitor the cognitive and physical development of children from underprivileged communities.

Officials said the newly launched Anganwadi would also serve as a model center for training Anganwadi workers, enabling them to use AI-powered dashboards and analytics tools to monitor children’s nutrition, health, and learning milestones. The system will also alert parents and caregivers about pending vaccinations, developmental gaps, and other essential updates.

“Mission Bal Bharari” aims to upgrade over 1,000 Anganwadi centers across Maharashtra by 2027. The project supports the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with a focus on strengthening foundational learning through digital tools and early interventions.

The Waddhamna center was selected for the pilot project due to its existing infrastructure and active community engagement. According to local authorities, the center will also address regional linguistic needs and cultural context through AI-based adaptive content.

The Maharashtra government has collaborated with several tech startups and education-focused non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to implement the AI systems and ensure scalability. The model is expected to be expanded across other districts based on the success of the Waddhamna pilot.

Community members have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the AI-enabled Anganwadi will significantly enhance educational access and quality for children in rural areas. Experts have also lauded the project as a potential game-changer in the way early childhood development programs are delivered in India.

With over 13.9 lakh Anganwadi centers operating under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme across the country, the success of this AI-driven model could pave the way for nationwide adoption, officials added.

The launch of this smart Anganwadi marks a major milestone in India’s efforts to blend cutting-edge technology with grassroots governance to achieve inclusive and equitable education for all.
