Siddaramaiah Meets Rajnath Singh, Seeks Defence Land for Bengaluru Metro and Tunnel Projects

Karnataka defence land request

10 July, 2025-In a move aimed at accelerating key infrastructure projects in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to request the release of defence land. The land is required for the execution of the proposed Bengaluru tunnel road and further expansion of the city’s metro network.

During the official meeting, Siddaramaiah sought approval for the transfer of select defence-owned plots that are critical for advancing urban transport infrastructure. These parcels fall within high-density zones of the city, where space constraints have stalled progress on projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity.

The Chief Minister highlighted that both the Bengaluru tunnel road, spanning approximately 190 kilometres, and the Namma Metro expansion are vital for meeting the city’s growing mobility needs. He assured the Defence Ministry that the state government would implement all necessary security protocols while utilizing the requested land.

“Our government is committed to modernizing Bengaluru’s infrastructure in collaboration with the Centre. The availability of this land will directly impact project timelines and help us reduce travel delays for millions of citizens,” Siddaramaiah noted following the meeting.

Sources indicate that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh responded positively and assured a thorough examination of the proposal in coordination with relevant ministries. A formal review is expected to assess the feasibility of the transfer while ensuring that national defence interests remain unaffected.

In addition to the infrastructure appeal, the Chief Minister also discussed broader collaboration in the defence manufacturing sector. Karnataka, which already houses several defence-related research and production facilities, is aiming to further boost its role in the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives by expanding defence industrial corridors.

Siddaramaiah proposed the establishment of new clusters to support indigenous production of advanced defence technologies, including aerospace systems, drones, and precision equipment. He emphasized that Karnataka offers skilled manpower, robust infrastructure, and an investor-friendly environment suitable for high-tech industries.

Another major focus of the meeting was the Dasara Airshow 2025, which is scheduled to take place in Mysuru later this year. The Chief Minister invited the Defence Ministry to actively participate in organizing the event, which is expected to showcase aerial displays by the Indian Air Force and highlight technological advancements in aviation and defence.

The airshow is being positioned as a national attraction that combines cultural celebration with strategic outreach. Preparations are underway to ensure wide public engagement and international visibility for India’s defence capabilities.

Karnataka’s request for land transfer reflects its broader push to align infrastructure development with national strategic priorities. A decision on the matter is anticipated after inter-ministerial consultations and security assessments.
