July 26,2025:
India is set to witness a historic moment in international chess as Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh prepare to face each other in the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025. This marks the first time two Indian players will contest the final of this prestigious tournament, highlighting the country’s growing dominance in the global chess arena.
Koneru Humpy, one of India’s most experienced and respected players, earned her place in the final after a closely contested semifinal match against Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk. The 37-year-old displayed strategic brilliance and composure during the tiebreak rounds, reinforcing her reputation as one of the strongest female players in the world.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Divya Deshmukh stunned the chess world with her victory over Russian Grandmaster Aleksandra Goryachkina, the tournament’s second seed. Known for her dynamic and fearless style, Deshmukh’s consistent performances against top-ranked opponents have made her the youngest Indian to reach the final of the Women’s World Cup.
The upcoming final represents more than just a battle for the title — it symbolizes a generational moment in Indian chess. While Humpy brings decades of experience and accolades, Deshmukh’s rise signals a promising future for the sport in the country. The match is expected to draw significant interest both nationally and internationally.
This edition of the Women’s World Cup also serves as a pathway to the Women’s Candidates Tournament, which determines the challenger for the World Championship. Both Humpy and Deshmukh, by reaching the final, have already secured crucial qualification points and enhanced their global standings.
Scheduled for July 28 in Baku, the final will not only crown the champion of the 2025 Women’s World Cup but also mark a defining chapter in India’s chess history. As the nation celebrates this rare feat, the clash between experience and emerging talent promises to be a memorable one.
